AI in the D: Detroit Students Build with AI

On July 23, 2025, more than 100 Detroit high school students came together at Fellowship Chapel to explore the possibilities of artificial intelligence. Through a full-day immersion, students worked with tools including ChatGPT and Gemini, collaborated on business ideas and presented their concepts in a live pitch competition.

Participants received laptops, and $10,000 in prizes was awarded. According to the Foundation's program report, every participating student created an original AI-driven business concept, while 94% reported greater confidence using AI. The experience reflected the Foundation's belief that exposure, guidance and hands-on practice can help young people imagine new futures.

A Year of Progress with Google.org

The Chapman Family Foundation's partnership with Google.org helped turn a shared commitment to opportunity into tangible community experiences. The Foundation's 2025 progress report acknowledges a $200,000 grant supporting Breakfast with Santa in December 2024 and the launch of AI in the D in July 2025.

Together, the initiatives connected community care with digital learning, supporting children and families while introducing Detroit students to emerging technology. As the Foundation evaluates future programming, its focus remains on accessible education, meaningful partnerships and clear reporting on results.

A Holiday Tradition Built Around Belonging

Wright Museum of African American History, the event welcomes children into a beautiful setting filled with festive food, gifts, photographs with Santa and memorable performances.

The Detroit Youth Choir has performed at past celebrations. The 2024 event also marked the announcement of Google.org support for the Foundation’s digital learning agenda. For our family, the celebration is about making sure children feel seen, valued and surrounded by possibility.

Helping Students Imagine Their Entrepreneurial Futures

Since 2023, the Chapman Family Foundation has returned to Michigan State University’s Entrepreneur Leadership High School Camp to help students imagine their futures as entrepreneurs and leaders. As presenting sponsor across a three-year commitment spanning the 2023–2026 period, the Foundation has contributed guest speakers, mentors and real business case studies from Storehouse.

Students from across Michigan stay on campus, experience university life, develop business concepts and connect with accomplished professionals. The camp celebrated its fifth year in 2026. In a past year, a Nike collaboration also provided shoes to students. These experiences show students that the world of business and higher education is within reach.
